[ he is now here! temenos is set up somewhere comfortable in the dorm, having been fed a couple of remedies - his arm is bandaged more properly now, and he's settled in his bed, looking tired but less like he's about to fucking die. he still looks very singed and probably in need of a shower, but that's alright. ]

and, in the morning, you awaken to a hubbub in the center of stormhail.
you've seen this hubbub before - the shocked crowds, the murmuring. someone died, last night - someone was murdered, and you imagine it had everything to do with the very same sacred guard and the truth you've been seeking all this time.
"That's one of them from the sacred guard, isn't it? How'd this happen?" says a concerned townsperson. another gasps, says a prayer. you ask them to move with a combination of politeness and your general aura as the inquisitor and stride through the crowd, and as it parts -
for the third time, a part of your world shatters into pieces.
slumped up against the brick wall outside of the headquarters of the sacred guard is crick wellsley. his body is mangled; blood seeps through his white cloak and down into the white snow, down his white, lifeless face. by some miracle of aelfric, at least his eyes are closed.
your stomach does an unpleasant, horrible twist, and his name tears out of your mouth somewhere between horror and despair - "Crick!" - as you shove past the last of the crowd to drop to his side, to check his pulse. it's the same thing you felt when the pontiff died - that the healing magic you have mastered is useless, that this supposed gift you were given is pointless in the moments it matters the most. you press your fingers to crick's wrist. nothing. once again you can do nothing.
roi's disappearance, first. the pontiff, dead on the floor, mauled by a beast in his own cathedral. and now...
you don't really realize it, but like any number of mourners you've comforted before, you find yourself asking no one - why. the whammy of grief and frustration - why crick, of all people, even if you know the answer - burbles uselessly in the back of your brilliant brain, and it's as you're still holding his wrist that you notice the scrap of paper clutched tightly in crick's free hand. slowly, you uncurl his fingers, icy cold and stiff, and pull free what looks like a torn page from of a book, with a single line of writing."Surrender yourself not unto silent dusk. For the light shall fade."
it's the same words. the same ones scribbled onto a scrap of bloody paper in the pontiff's final book of scripture. it's a clue. it's a - it's information.
it's as you're holding this in your hand, eyes wide and head already starting to spin, that you hear the sacred guard bark at the crowd to leave. one in particular comes to the corpse, to you, and speaks with loathing. - "what are you doing here?"
you snap at one of many useless crows that he's your friend, that you want to help with the investigation, but you're called dead weight, and the sacred guard scoffs and sends you away. you go, without protest, clutching the paper crick died for in your hand, safely stolen away from the prying eyes of the crows.
for a moment, you look past them. you think of crick, his beseeching eyes and naive, pure dream. his want to fix corruption, the way roi had, the way you want to. the last bastion of goodness left standing in the church of the sacred flame, the little lamb who you'd grown quite fond of, now struck down - a lamb in the den of the wolves - and you stare at the paper in your hand.
"Your clue is safe, and it was not laid out in vain. I will follow the path you've laid out before me."
and you do what you've done a hundred times in your life. you do what you did when you were standing at the body of the man who raised you, the only authority figure you've ever known and trusted. you do it now, at the body of your little lamb, who despite all the questioning you led him to, believed in you.
you close your eyes, and you tap into yourself, and you put all of your grief and heartbreak down at the bottom of your soul. it doesn't matter, how you feel. what matters is what always does.
softly, you say: "The truth...lies in the flame."
and you get down to business to find it. ]

Axel himself? Definitely actually surprisingly an early one. He attributes that to his time in the Organization.
There was a need to make that an absolute for various reasons, including reconnaissance, and the like. Though he certainly never advertised it, even remarking he'd stick around laying in bed all day long if he had the choice. By now, the habit's ingrained in him, so those wishes are moot even from bygone days.
He comes back with some snacks...crepes, if you will. Who says it's ever a terrible time to eat anything anywhere? They are also wrapped in napkins, one for Temenos, and he would've asked him if he wanted one. But the memories are upon him in an instant, and just like that, there is nothing to substitute the viewing for such things not at all. ]

[ Yesterday was certainly a time. This week sure happens to be insistent on providing memories without much warning.
That being the case, that hasn't stopped being a thing, even as Axel has gotten up early in the dorms. When he returns this time, giving out a wave, to greet Temenos, with a bag of a certain kind of snack (it just might contain 'sea-salt' in the name), there is a slight interruption. By an errant comic page slipping on into view, of course.
The memory doesn't start out all that well (up until 3:47.)
A man with blue hair—Saix, the Luna Diviner...no, Isa, Axel's former best friend—swings his claymore, sending shockwaves that force both his friends—Sora and Kairi—back, the brunet alongside the red-haired female flying backwards from the blow. They land harshly, unable to recover even as the blue-haired male advances ruthlessly, determined to finish the job.
"Stop it, Isa!"
Of course, the man doesn't listen to the red head's call. Axel is subsequently forced to intercept with his own Keyblade, jumping right in, swinging it to block the other from advancing further. But the power behind his old friend's swing has Axel already at his knees, and the man, surrounded by the frantic grip of the controlled lunacy that has taken ahold of him in his Berserker state, raises his weapon again. Only to stop suddenly.
The pause is as unnerving as it is relieving.
The cause reveals itself soon. A portal of darkness appears right nearby the blue-haired male, and out walks a familiar figure. Golden eyes, white long hair, and a cloak to match Axel's and Saix's. It can only be...
Axel grits his teeth, muttering, "Xemnas..."

The so-called 'Superior' seems to tut, "Ah, ever the rogue pawn. Knocked from the board early in the game. Utterly useless and forgotten."
Of course, he can't let him get away with this. A challenging grin is easy to witness on the red head's face. "You kidding? Do you know how popular I am? I got loads of people rootin' for me. Sorry, boss. No one axes Axel. Got it memorized?"
Axel then goes to swing his Keyblade straight towards Xemnas...only for the man to catch it with ease. Xemnas looks nonplussed and in a tone filled with derision, asks, "Is this supposed to be a Keyblade? Or is it some kind of...joke?"
With a string of darkness, he forces Axel back, dissipating the Keyblade just like that. Xemnas even follows up with a barrage of incoming lasers that hit Axel dead on, who falls straight to his knees. Xemnas summoners another laser following that flurry of attack, holding it like a blade as he begins to stalk menacingly. Xemnas' words are a sneer that doesn't show on his face. "Our plans have been dashed by you...far more more times than I care to count. Now, it ends. I will purge that light in you...with darkness!"
Whatever he thinks is coming, Axel thinks nothing about it but facing it with dignity, eyes glaring even as Xemnas pulls back his hand, and the laser shoots forward, towards Axel's head at close range.
Only to be stopped by an outstretched gloved hand by a hooded figure. That confuses Axel as much as Xemnas, who is evidently irritated, but who cares about him?
The deep, malevolent rumble of the man is clear. "Changing sides again?"
A female's voice comes from this stranger. "We need him alive. You know that."
"We only need his heart in order to forge the key. We do not need his soul," Xemnas retorts, but then smiles as he adds, "Oh...but that's right. You were 'friends'. Then...you take his life."
Axel feels his heart almost stop—almost dreadful expectation in hearing those words first utter, and a sharp, painful confusion at the other. Literally for the latter as his head is hurting right about now.
The hooded individual in black stands up, only to point a Keyblade at Axel, right as his mouth opens to question something—
"Who are you?"
There seems to be a struggle, until a brunet intervenes, intent on getting her to stop. Following the ensuing struggle, Axel recalls something important after Xemnas kicks both Sora and the now-unhooded black-haired female. That person he had forgotten...is Xion, one of his best friends.
Xemnas steps forward, summoning a laser from his hand to finish it but Axel will not have it, grabbing desperately onto his former leader's leg.
He scoffs. "Your Keyblade is no more. And still you think you can play at being a guardian of light?"
...And that's where it ends. Axel blinks a couple of times before raising a hand to rub at the back of his head a bit. ]

That being the case, that hasn't stopped being a thing, even as Axel has gotten up early in the dorms. When he returns this time, giving out a wave, to greet Temenos, with a bag of a certain kind of snack (it just might contain 'sea-salt' in the name), there is a slight interruption. By an errant comic page slipping on into view, of course.
The memory doesn't start out all that well (up until 3:47.)
A man with blue hair—Saix, the Luna Diviner...no, Isa, Axel's former best friend—swings his claymore, sending shockwaves that force both his friends—Sora and Kairi—back, the brunet alongside the red-haired female flying backwards from the blow. They land harshly, unable to recover even as the blue-haired male advances ruthlessly, determined to finish the job.
"Stop it, Isa!"
Of course, the man doesn't listen to the red head's call. Axel is subsequently forced to intercept with his own Keyblade, jumping right in, swinging it to block the other from advancing further. But the power behind his old friend's swing has Axel already at his knees, and the man, surrounded by the frantic grip of the controlled lunacy that has taken ahold of him in his Berserker state, raises his weapon again. Only to stop suddenly.
The pause is as unnerving as it is relieving.
The cause reveals itself soon. A portal of darkness appears right nearby the blue-haired male, and out walks a familiar figure. Golden eyes, white long hair, and a cloak to match Axel's and Saix's. It can only be...

well. first of all, axel's attitude has never changed, which is kind of funny. the way he mouths off to this guy that is clearly his (former) superior brings a smile to temenos's face, initially, (he's like this also) but he's too smart to forget that these memories never seem to be happy ones. and, sure enough, as it continues - well, by the time it starts to reach a climax, the conversation of light and darkness is too familiar, and xemnas's hit strikes, temenos is half out of his chair just on sheer instinct.

The results were certainly a thing too, but boy Axel is just feeling wiped from all of that. There is still a stretch ahead of them to run through, but all the same, it doesn't mean they're no longer human, and need to wind down.
